Ten Signs It’s Time to Call a Roofer

March 25, 2022

The roof of your home is vital to the safety and protection of your home. If your roof is in good shape, your family can know they will not have leaks dripping on them, and your roof will be less likely to be damaged by storms and can withstand most debris blown onto the roof.

But homeowners need to be able to “read” their roof to determine whether it is time to hire a professional to inspect their roof and, if necessary, repair any damage or replace old materials. Here’s a guide about what to look for when deciding whether you need a professional.

  1. Roof leakage. This is the most obvious sign that you need to hire a roofer. The best way to inspect for leaks or potential leaks is to closely inspect inside the house after every hard rainstorm.
  2. Interior paint is peeling. If paint is peeling on the ceiling of a room inside the house, this can be an indication that water is accumulating somewhere between the roof and the ceiling. This is a dire warning that your roof needs repair promptly.
  3. Algae growth on the roof. If there is enough moisture on the shingles of your roof, it can sustain life in the form of algae. This will make the shingles deteriorate over time and damage their ability to protect the home from developing leaks and other problems.
  4. Mold and mildew growing indoors. Mold or mildew on a ceiling or wall inside the house needs to be fixed immediately because it can lead to health problems for members of the family. Mold and mildew can be the result of a leaky roof, but they can also be due to a plumbing problem or excessive condensation that may originate in soil.
  5. Cracked or damaged roof shingles. Shingles can age or break from strong winds. They need to be repaired promptly before they cause bigger problems, like leaks.
  6. Missing asphalt shingles. If you notice loosened shingles or dark patches on your roof where shingles are missing, it is time for roof repair.
  7. Curling and wrapping shingles. This is one of the surest indications you need roof repair promptly. These damaged shingles are evidence that your shingles are too old to do the job of protecting your house, and roof repair is needed.
  8. Shingle granules in your gutters. If your shingles are shedding their “black sand” granules, which help protect your roof, it is an indication your shingles are getting weaker.
  9. Clogged gutters that do not drain properly. Aside from shedding shingle granules, leaves, and other materials clogging your gutters indicate the roof performance is deteriorating.
  10. Steady rise of energy bills. If you experience a steady rise in your energy bill that cannot be explained by weather or an increase in energy rates, it may be due to a leak that gets your insulation wet and allows the performance of the insulation to deteriorate.
