Seven Ways to Prepare Your Roof for Spring Weather

March 11, 2022

Make sure your roof can endure the spring storms of Texas.

The rainy season in Central Texas is April and May, for the most part. We can also get stormy weather in October due to hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico. These are the seasons to inspect and repair your roof to ensure you will not have leaks in a storm.

Inspect your roof carefully. Check your roof for existing leaks. Even a small leak can cause major damage in a big storm when leaks tend to get bigger from water damage and high winds.

Inspect gutters and remove leaves and other material every spring and fall. Temperatures rising and falling during different seasons can loosen the connections of the gutters to the roof, making them weak and susceptible to wind damage.

Trim tall trees and neighboring branches. Overgrown tree branches can cause faster damage to roof shingles due to stormy winds. Even a branch that just brushes your roof under normal conditions can cause damage in a storm. Trimming neighboring tree branches in the spring can help manage that damage. Keep your roof free of any branches that touch your roof by trimming them back in the spring and fall.

Take a look in your attic. After an exterior inspection of your roof, it is important to inspect the roof from the attic to see if there are any interior signs of roof damage. It’s most important to see if there are any places where light gets in. If there are such places, they indicate holes in the roof that might ultimately lead to a leak in a rainstorm. Look for any signs of water damage on the inside of the roof. This damage can be difficult to see, but it is a good indicator of possible problems in the future.

Inspect the flashing. Flashing is the metal seal where the roof meets the house that ensures water does not leak into the house. Inspect the flashing for corroded, weak, or missing flashing parts.

Examine the roof deck. If water leaks in through a bad shingle and runs onto the wood boards that the roofing materials are laid over, that can cause a deteriorating leak adjacent to the house itself. Inspect your interior carefully to see if there are any watermarks on your ceiling or walls.

Replace and repair shingles. Shingles can come loose or be damaged by tree branches. Missing or broken shingles can allow wind to get under them and even lift whole sections of the roof. When this happens, it is time to schedule roofing repair.
